Sparky says "I'm exhausted...time for a nap!"

P.S. Special thanks to BAR!

My Thoughts

I really enjoyed it! And I really, really mean that. I learned a lot and feel much more "up" on the technology available on the internet. I am addicted to YouTube and love RSS feeds. While most things I will not use, it was still interesting to learn about all the crazy, inventive things that are going on.

I would definitely sign up for another discovery program!

Audiobooks

Week 9 Thing 22
I have listed to audio books on a cd player...never downloaded. I don't own an mp3 or an ipod or whatever. Here's my problem with audio books: I can't get past a man trying to speak like a woman. It just does not work for me. However, I looked at Maryland's e-libray and what I really found that I would like to download are videos. There are some great foreign films listed. I had no idea!

This was a good exercise for me, because I have a much better understanding of downloading books and will be more comfortable in the future discussing it with patrons. Some day I may even venture to download one on my home computer.

Podcasts

Week 9 Thing 21

I liked what some of the libraries were doing....podcasting book talks and library news. It would be a great way to reach more people with our programs. The storytelling did not work for me at all when it was just the audio, but Westerville Public Library was more appealing with the interactive book. The thing I still find amazing and wonderful is the access to so many interesting things thru the internet and in this case, podcasts, that we never had access to before.

Little trouble adding a podcast RSS feed to my Bloglines but I eventually got it.

YouTube

Week 9 Thing 20

Ok...this is just plain scary...I could become addicted to YouTube. I have found all kinds of great Minnesota Gopher Hockey team, yorkie and Bruce Springsteen videos. I won't inflict the Gophers on you, so here is a cute panda bear video. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FzRH3iTQPrk

Web 2.0 Awards

Week 8 Thing 19
I tried Picnik, a photo editor, which I really liked and found easy to use. It is a website that I think I would use both at home and at work. At work it would allow me to edit pictures I would like to use for display signs.

On Line Productivity Tools

Week 8 Thing 18
Google.docs.....I think this is a wonderful tool....nevering have to mess with different versions, easy to share and update docs. I only wish they had this when I worked in corporate America!

Sandbox Wiki

Week 7 Thing 17
Geez....I DID NOT LIKE THIS AT ALL! I accidently wiped out the instructions for adding your blog to the Maryland Libraries Sandbox when I was adding my blog to the website!

Wiki's

Week 7, Thing 16
I really like the idea of sharing info in a wiki. I think wikis would be very useful in the workplace for sharing "best practices", program info, innovative ideas, etc. I like the idea of Princeton's Book Lovers Wiki and think it would be a great place for patrons to share their reading likes and dislikes. I also think the library should consider changing the Community Information (MdShare) into a wiki where community organizations, associations, civic groups, etc. could add and update their organizations info.

This is ironic since I just posted about the need for libraries to change...but I hope we never lose the beauty, feel and comfort of a good book!

Web 2.0, Library 2.0 & the Future

Week 6 Thing 15
I found all of these articles very interesting because I have felt and continue to feel that the library must make major changes in order to be relevant in the future. As Rick Anderson wrote in his article, Away from the Icebergs, libraries do not have a monopoly on information anymore. In order to survive libraries must become the one stop shopping place for access to info...I loved John Reimer's To Better Bibliographic Services. He calls for a "comprehensive menu of choices in a single place." Looking for info? Let the patron access book buying services, access information/books from all libraries (public, educational institutions, etc) as simple as entering a search term and pressing a button, have RSS services pushing info patrons want directly to them. If the library does not make information available, easy to access and interactive...patrons are going to go someplace else.

I think Library 2.0 means nothing less than our survival.

Technorati

Week 6 Thing14
Per Learning 2.0 Technorati is "the leading search tool and authority for blogs." I found it confusing, unhelpful, way more info than I want or need. Some of the popular sites were of questionable taste. I did find an interesting political blog but on the whole there are easier ways to find poltical blogs. Frankly...I don't care about all these people and their endless blogs about everything and anything. I am on INFORMATION OVERLOAD! I am shutting down now.

Tagging and Del.icio.us

Week 6 Thing 13
I think tagging can be helpful if it is reasonably accurate...I went to a library website that had tagging for Harlan Coban books and some of it was pretty esoteric...not sure who was allowed to do the tagging.

I found it very hard to get into Del.icio.us...just another website that needed another login. However, once I sat down and really looked at it...I found some very helpful information.
As a reference librarian I am asked a lot about Maryland divorce law...Del.icio.us provided some excellent sites I was unfamiliar with and which would be very useful. I can see using Del.icio.us to organize and make available very quickly these sites and others on a wide range of topics. These could be accessed by librarians and patrons. On a personnal note...it popped up some wonderful vintage fabric sites I have never seen!

Since I can NEVER remember favorite miniature websites I think that this might be quite useful to me...on the other hand I could just put them in "My Favorites"!

LibraryThing

Week 5 Thing 11
I like this...it is a great way to keep track of books I like (or don't like). The trick is will I actually keep it updated...probably not!
Here are some of my favorite books....

Image Generator

Week 5 Thing 10
Liked the Lolcat generator (http://generatorblog.blogspot.com/2007/05/lolcat-generator.html). Most of the others did not interest me too much. Really liked the Avatars...they are addicting!

Feed Tools

Week 4 Thing 9
At first I thought I liked Feedster because I like news feeds...but when I chose a specific topic for the news feeds I got strange unrelated things and feeds that I thought were questionable as "news" feeds. It was easy to use however. You can narrow Technorati down to some pretty specific subjects which I like - though it is only blogs and I really prefer news feeders. The amount of information and choices are just overwhelming. I also like Topix a lot. I can get the latest news from my hometown. Didn't like Syndic8 at all - very confusing.

RSS and Newsreader

Week 4 Thing 8
This was all absolutely new to me...I have to admit I had never even heard of this stuff before. I like RSS and newsreader. I think that I will actually use my newly created Blogline account. It's great that I can go to one site and look at all the news sites and political blogs that I read. That is an advantage - it does save time. I hope that I just don't give up surfing the net and limit myself to just these sites.

Baby Elephant

Week 3 Thing 5
I love this photo for two reasons....baby elephants are adorable and I have always liked miniaturized things - any thing! The juxaposition of little feet and big feet appeals to me, as well as the protective nature of the photo.

Technology

Week 3 Thing 7
Sorry...my "Things" are a little out of order. One of the life long learner's habits (I think it was #8) I never learned...read all the instructions first!

Here is what I like about technology....I can do my banking right online! I can go to YouTube and listen to James Blunt sing "You're Beautiful" over and over again and drive Erica nuts! (Thank you, Erica, for introducing me to YouTube!) I have access to vintage wallpaper hat boxes on Ebay that would have taken me years to find in antique malls. The digital camera is the greatest invention since the Internet. I like Flickr and will even attempt to create a family picture album online. I think it could be very useful for display posters too. I love access to news from a wide varity of sources (domestic and foreign) and I can't do without political blogs.

Blogging and Life Long Learning

Week 2 Thing 3 & 4
My blog is set up and I am BLOGGING! This is scary! Who let the dogs out?

I think this day and age requires a person to be a life long learner....it is the only way to survive.
We no longer stay in the same job cradle to grave. And we are in a world now where technology changes so rapidly one can't afford to fall behind.

I have no problem with Habit #3..... I always view problems as challenges and it drives me nuts until I have solved a problem. I enjoy the feeling of figuring something out....even if it takes me a long time. However, I don't have complete confidence in myself as a competent and effective learner (Habit #4). Sometimes it takes me a long time to learn something new, in part because I am a very visual learner.

In terms of new technology I have another problem of not wanting to be so constantly connected to the world...cell phones, instant messaging, etc. I'm not opposed to the technology, I just don't want to be connected to it 24/7!
